India Celebrates UNESCO Recognition of Bhagavad Gita and Natyashastra

Historic Recognition for Indian Heritage

New Delhi— In a significant acknowledgment of India's rich cultural and philosophical legacy, the Bhagavad Gita and Natyashastra have been officially added to UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register, as announced by the Ministry of Culture this week.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed this achievement as a moment of pride for Indians globally.

He expressed on the social media platform X, "The addition of the Gita and Natyashastra to UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register signifies worldwide recognition of our enduring wisdom and vibrant culture. These texts have been instrumental in shaping civilization and consciousness for ages, continuing to inspire people around the globe."

Union Minister of Culture and Tourism, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, who broke the news on X, referred to this recognition as a pivotal moment for India's civilizational heritage.

He stated, "The Shrimad Bhagavad Gita and Bharat Muni’s Natyashastra are now part of UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register. This international accolade honors India’s timeless wisdom and artistic brilliance. These works are not merely literary gems; they are foundational to our philosophy and aesthetics, influencing how we perceive, feel, and express ourselves in Bharat."

With this latest addition, India now boasts 14 entries in the UNESCO register, which aims to safeguard documentary heritage of global importance.

The Bhagavad Gita is a highly regarded Hindu scripture, often viewed as a guide to life and duty. The Natyashastra, credited to the ancient sage Bharat Muni, serves as a comprehensive guide on drama, dance, and music, laying the groundwork for Indian performing arts.
